FRANÇOIS CLOUET (C. 1520-1572)

Charles IX King of France as a boy

circa 1561

RCIN 420931

François Clouet followed his father, Jean Clouet, in developing the new art form of the portrait miniature. Few of his miniatures now survive. This example can be traced back to the collection of Charles I, where it was identified as Charles IX’s brother, Francis II, the short-lived husband of Mary, Queen of Scots.
