Books of Hours were intended as private prayer books for ordinary people, matching the hours of the liturgical day. They were usually mass-produced, but could be finely decorated to order. This portrait of Saint Mark is based on a portrait of Saint Matthew in the Briçonnet Hours illuminated by Jean Poyer (fl. Tours 1483 – 97).
