ATTRIBUTED TO A FOLLOWER OF MARTIN SCHONGAUER (C. 1435/50-1491)

A head of a bearded man wearing a turban

c.1480

RCIN 912173

Martin Schongauer was one of the most influential German artists of the late fifteenth century and ran a large workshop. This small drawing was probably made by one of Schongauer’s followers as a working model. Figures in exotic dress were often used in biblical scenes to denote someone of eastern origin, or one who had not converted to Christianity.
