FRANÇOIS CLOUET (C. 1520-1572)

Mary, Queen of Scots

circa 1558

RCIN 401229

Mary’s gesture in placing a ring on the fourth finger of her right hand is thought to allude to her marriage, in 1558, to Francis II. The production of portrait miniatures was often associated at this period with the negotiation or formalisation of marriage. This was in keeping with their development as a form of art for private, rather than public, consumption.
