HANS MEMLING (C. 1440-1494)

Portrait of a Man

c. 1475-1480

RCIN 404419

The identity of the sitter is not known. The portrait may mark his initiation into a society or confraternity because of the way in which he draws attention to his pendant with his right hand. Memling’s ability to capture the realistic mobility of a face made his portraits very popular in his own country and Italy.
