FRANK HURLEY (1885-1962)

The frozen surface of the Weddell sea taken just before the ship was crushed.

1915

RCIN 2580068

This photograph was taken shortly before 18 October 1915, when this apparently benign ice field came under the influence of tides and winds, causing the ship to be crushed. The man with his dog sled can have little idea of what is about to happen to the distant ship.
