Launching the 'James Caird' for the relief voyage to South Georgia

24 April 1916

RCIN 2580109

This photograph marks the beginning of the tiring and soaking process of launching the James Caird, after loading her with ballast from the Stancomb Wills. The swell in the bay nearly caused her to capsize, tipping two of her crew into the water. Despite these difficulties the James Caird was ready to sail by midday on 24 April 1916.
