JOHN WOOTTON (C. 1682-1764)

William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1721-1765)

c.1745

RCIN 400695

This is a lively oil sketch for a lost (or never executed) equestrian portrait of the Duke of Cumberland with fellow officers. Cumberland was the most successful royal soldier of the period, generally admired for his exceptional courage, though sometimes criticised for his tactics. The brutal aftermath of the Battle of Culloden has tarnished his reputation significantly. Purchased by HM The Queen in 1959 Cat. 40
