JOHN PYKE (ACTIVE 1710-77), BEDFORD ROW

Table clock

circa 1740

RCIN 30421

The clock’s decoration loosely imitates the lacquered creations of the Far East that were popular in Britain in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, on to which coloured paper cut-outs of fruit and flowers have been pasted. John Pyke was a musical clock specialist and completed some of Charles Clay’s clocks (see cat. 120) after the latter’s death in 1740. Bought by HM The Queen, 1960 Cat. 121
