The growth of the sport of game shooting in this period led to a number of experiments with the form and firing mechanisms of the shotgun including innovations such as a rifled barrel, safety catches, barrels that could be rotated and detachable cartridges for pre-loading shot. Gun-makers also experimented with materials and the length and weight of their guns. It was common too for men to carry pistols for their personal protection
