RICHARD ROBERTS (ACTIVE 1714-29)

Side chair

1717

RCIN 1071

These two chairs come from a larger set that probably originally numbered 18. They may be those supplied in 1717 for George I’s private Dining Room at Hampton Court Palace. Their design reflects the fashion for Chinese-inspired furniture with a ‘bended’ or curved back, however the carving is derived from European sources. The needlework on the seat is eighteenth-century but added later. Possibly supplied to George I in 1717 Cat. 99
