? THOMAS SANDBY (1721-98)

Order of battle at Culloden, 1746 (Culloden Moor, Highland Region, Scotland, UK) 57°28'00"N 04°05'00"W

c.1746

RCIN 730021

This plan was probably made for the Duke of Cumberland by his draughtsman Thomas Sandby, who was present at the battle. It records the Jacobite troop formations before the battle, with 4,350 men in the front line as a tight formation, and four cannon each to left, right and centre. Prince Charles Edward’s strategy is clear: he had held certain regiments back from the front line ‘to succour when needfull’. King’s Military Map Collection Cat. 60
