This is a preparatory oil sketch for a large painting in the church of Santi Cosma e Damiano in Venice. Marco Ricci supplied the landscape and Sebastiano the figures, both employing an animated, twisting style of brushwork to convey the drama of the scene. Acquired by Joseph Smith and bought from him in 1762 by George III Cat. 232
