In 1759, British focus fell on Quebec City. This was the capital of New France, from which the French controlled the St Lawrence River. A British force under General James Wolfe pursued a campaign against the French from their camp on the Île d’Orléans, shown here. Quebec surrendered in September after a British victory (and Wolfe’s death) at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham. King’s Military Map Collection Cat. 72
