FRANÇOIS CHEREAU (1680-1729)

JACQUES III. ROY DE LA GRANDE BRETAGNE.

1712

RCIN 603524

Prince James Francis Edward Stuart, son of King James II, laid claim to the British throne as James III. His rival court, based in Paris, agitated against Hanoverian rule and launched a number of risings to unseat George I and George II. Prints such as this, which describes the Prince as ‘King of Great Britain’ were circulated throughout Europe, and were purchased by British supporters of the Jacobite cause. Perhaps purchased by the Prince of Wales (later George IV) in 1807 Cat. 42
