In his lifetime, Claude was praised for his exceptional observation of the effects of sunlight and other natural phenomena. He was admired by eighteenth-century English collectors for his ability to ‘improve’ on nature, creating a dream world of the imagination, poised between the modern and ancient worlds. Acquired by Frederick, Prince of Wales, who also commissioned the frame Cat. 131
