Vanderbank’s contemporaries felt that he had wasted a great talent in ‘irregular living’. Something of that potential can be seen in this imposing equestrian portrait, which invites comparison with Van Dyck’s images of Charles I. Presented to King George V and Queen Mary in 1932 Cat. 238
