SIR JAMES THORNHILL (1675-1734)

Design for the Prince of Wales's Bedchamber at Hampton Court

c.1715

RCIN 917762

Thornhill drew this as a preliminary design for the ceiling painting of the bedchamber of George and Caroline, when they were Prince and Princess of Wales. The animated mythological scene probably represents the repeated yet unsuccessful attempts of Aurora, goddess of the dawn, to seduce the dashing Greek prince Cephalus. Acquired by HM The Queen in 1954 Cat. 37
