EUSTACHE LE SUEUR (1616-55)

Caligula depositing the Ashes of his Mother and Brother in the Tomb of his Ancestors

c.1647

RCIN 404983

Le Sueur was regarded as a French Raphael, telling classical stories with idealised and expressive figures. Though remembered as a monster, Caligula began his rule as a popular Emperor, especially impressing the Roman people with the piety with which he buried his mother and brother, both murdered by his predecessor, Tiberius. Acquired by Frederick, Prince of Wales Cat. 129
