WILLIAM HOGARTH (1697-1764)

The Popple Family

Signed and dated 1730

RCIN 400048

The three Popple brothers shown here were all involved in the administration of British colonies in America and Bermuda. The painting may have been commissioned by their sister, who sits at the left with a symbolic owl perched over her head. The little girl, Marianne, uses her father’s hat to hold her fishing bait – a typical piece of Hogarthian comedy.
