GODFRIED SCHALCKEN (MADE 1643-THE HAGUE 1706)

The Game of 'Lady, come into the Garden'

late 1660s

RCIN 405343

We do not know the rules of this forgotten parlour-game called ‘Lady come into the Garden’, but Schalcken’s biographer tells us that it was played by the ‘youngsters of Dordrecht’ when they had fun together. He also relates that Schalcken painted himself as the de-frocked young man and his sister, Maria, as his tormentor.
