THOMAS GAINSBOROUGH (1727-88)

Henry, Duke of Cumberland with Anne, Duchess of Cumberland, and Lady Elizabeth Luttrell

c.1785-8

RCIN 400675

The couple takes an evening stroll in Windsor Great Park, watched by Anne’s sister, Elizabeth, who carries a porte-crayon with which to record the scene. By scaling down the figures and enhancing the landscape, painted with wonderfully loose brushstrokes, Gainsborough has transformed a formal portrait into a scene from romance.
