GIOVANNI LANFRANCO (1582-1647)

The Martyrdom of St Thomas

c.1640

RCIN 905674

After establishing his reputation in Rome, Lanfranco moved in 1634 to Naples, where he painted many extensive fresco cycles including much of the interior of the large church of Santi Apostoli. This is a sketch for what is probably the Martyrdom of St Thomas, in half of a lunette – though the many corrections, including extra pieces of paper pasted on, show that Lanfranco was undecided about which half.
