POMPONIO AMALTEO (1505-88)

The Martyrdom of St Stephen

c.1535-40

RCIN 906664

Pomponio Amalteo was the pupil and assistant of Pordenone (no. 82, left), and at the start of his career his drawings were indebted to the example of his master. This careful drawing was presumably the model for a lost altarpiece. The composition follows Giulio Romano’s painting of the same subject in Santo Stefano, Genoa, which Amalteo may have seen when working in that city with Pordenone around 1532. No. 83
