ANTONIO ALLEGRI CORREGGIO (1489?-1534)

The Holy Family with Saint Jerome

c. 1519

RCIN 400029

This is an early work, probably dating from soon after Correggio left his native town to settle in Parma. The Virgin and Child with Joseph on the right all gaze at the figure on the left, thought to be St Jerome, who is blessed by the Christ Child. This and no. 35 are all that remain of the eight Correggios owned by Charles I. Acquired by Charles I, possibly from the Gonzaga collection No. 34
