GIROLAMO MUZIANO (1528-92)

St Jerome

c. 1580

RCIN 990440

A study for Muziano’s altarpiece of St Jerome preaching in the wilderness, painted for St Peter’s, Rome, and later transferred to Santa Maria degli Angeli. The pose is based on that of the prophet Ezekiel in Michelangelo’s Sistine ceiling, but the heavy figure and clinging drapery emulate Michelangelo’s later style, as typified by his frescoes of the 1540s in the Pauline Chapel of the Vatican.
