Recto: The Holy Family with Pope Clement VII. Verso: The Infant Christ.

c.1530

RCIN 904813

Sebastiano del Piombo moved to Rome in 1511 and became a close associate of Michelangelo. This study towards an unexecuted painting shows the Christ Child leaning on a globe, symbolising his dominion over the world. St Joseph introduces the kneeling Pope Clement VII, whom Sebastiano painted and drew many times, always emphasising his prominent nose and cheekbones. No. 18
