LODEWIJK TOEPUT (C. 1550-C. 1605)

Pleasure Garden with a Maze

c. 1579-1584

RCIN 402610

Lodewijk Toeput italianised his name to Pozzoserrato; his work combines Netherlandish and Venetian styles. This image draws on literary sources as well as actual gardens of the period. At its heart lies a clipped-hedge maze filled with amorous couples, some enjoying a banquet. The Piazzetta of San Marco in Venice can be seen in the distance.
