This and no. 4ii to the right are the only surviving fragments of an altarpiece for the church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome, damaged by a flood in October 1530 and dismembered by 1600. The missing sections showed Christ lowered from the cross by grieving apostles, two of whom are visible on the right panel.
