ATTRIBUTED TO PONTORMO (1494-1556)

The Virgin and Child

c.1534-40

RCIN 406117

The Virgin is seated holding an open book while the Christ Child looks up ecstatically. Joseph holds a saw and takes cherries (symbolising Heaven) from an older child, possibly St John the Baptist. There are 25 known versions of this design. The technique here with its lucid definition of form suggests that this one is by Pontormo himself.
