SIR DAVID WILKIE (1785-1841)

The Guerilla's Return

Signed and dated 1830

RCIN 405093

Commissioned as a companion piece to The Guerilla’s Departure, this painting shows the return of the wounded guerilla to his family and supporters. The four paintings in the set extol the role of ordinary peasants and priests in the Spanish War of Independence. In this instance, the sacrifice of this Spanish peasant-turned-freedom-fighter is emphasized by creating a visual parallel with images of Christ entering Jerusalem on a donkey. Commissioned by George IV in 1829.
