Prince William, Duke of Clarence, was the third son of George III and Queen Charlotte and succeeded to the throne as William IV in 1830, on the death of his brother, George IV. About two years old in this portrait, the Prince is shown wearing 'coats', the type of long dress worn by young boys at this time. Probably painted for George III or Queen Charlotte
