After acquiring The Madonna and Child (left), Prince Albert commissioned this painting of St Joseph. The two pictures were hung together in the Queen’s Bedroom at Osborne House, the royal couple’s home on the Isle of Wight. Both works were inspired by early Italian art, being painted on white grounds and with somewhat severe profile views. Commissioned by Prince Albert
