DAVID ROBERTS (1796-1864)

Ruins of the Abbey of Holyrood

dated 1823

RCIN 919572

Roberts worked as a theatrical scene painter in Edinburgh before he established himself as a landscape artist. This watercolour shows the west front of Holyrood Abbey, where it joins the north side of the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Founded in 1128 by David I of Scotland, the Abbey suffered much damage over the centuries and the picturesque remains inspired many artists and writers in the nineteenth century. Probably acquired by Queen Victoria
