The Perthshire-born sculptor Lawrence Macdonald spent time in Rome before he established a studio in Edinburgh in 1826 and undertook commissions for portrait busts. In 1832 he returned to Rome where he remained for the rest of his life. Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge was the tenth child of George III and Queen Charlotte and was Viceroy of Hanover from 1816 until 1837. Presented to Queen Victoria by Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge
