Signed and dated 1873RCIN 405024
Queen Victoria received this portrait just before her son’s marriage to the sitter in St Petersburg. She praised the likeness as ‘beautiful and quite worthy of a Winterhalter’. On the day of the wedding she recorded in her Journal how the picture was ‘surrounded by a wreath of evergreens & some orange flowers, tied with bows of the Russian colours’.
