Catherine II is painted as she travelled to the Crimea to inspect newly acquired lands. The sitter’s status and military authority are conveyed with the cut and colour of her jacket and its embroidered orders. Russian statesman Grigory Potemkin, a favourite of the Empress, employed the serf artist Shibanov.
