The Solovetsky Monastery

?c.1600-1650

RCIN 403387

The Monastery of Solovetsk in the far north of Russia was a site of pilgrimage. It is likely that this icon was produced for personal devotion by pilgrims. The icon painter captures the richness of the surrounding sea, and the bustle and sounds of the island community.
