Silver and parcel gilt metalwork with niello-filled engraving is an ancient traditional form of decoration found on arms and armour in Caucasus region and Russia, where it is called chern. Tula near Moscow and Veliky Ustyug in the Vologada region were well known for such niello work. 

Probably acquired by the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, late nineteenth century
