Glass production in Russia from the eighteenth century onwards was dominated by the Imperial Glass Manufactory, established in St Petersburg by Peter the Great in 1730. Of the privately owned firms, one of the best-known was the Maltsov Glass Factory near Moscow which produced cheaper models catering to a more popular taste, like this example engraved with the imperial arms of Catherine II.
