Catherine II, Empress of Russia (1729-96)

Catherine II is painted as she travelled to the Crimea to inspect newly acquired lands. The sitter’s status and military authority are conveyed with the cut and colour of her jacket and its embroidered orders. This image of the ageing monarch is in marked contrast to the coronation portrait of her by Vigilius Eriksen displayed nearby.
