Alexander III’s towering stature and imposing figure are well conveyed in this accomplished photographic enlargement taken shortly before the Emperor’s untimely death. Levitsky is often considered the patriarch of Russian photography for his many innovations in the field.

Probably acquired or presented to the Prince of Wales during his visit to Russia, 1894.
