26 Apr 1923

Gelatin silver print, pencil, white heightening | 58.6 x 44.0 cm (whole object) | RCIN 2941575

The Duke of York and Lady Elizabeth were married in Westminster Abbey on 26 April 1923. In his diary King George V noted that after continuous rain that morning ‘the sun actually came out as Elizabeth entered the Abbey’. In this photograph, taken at Buckingham Palace after the wedding, she holds no bouquet as she had placed it on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
