Rose of York brooch

1893

Gold, enamel, diamonds | 2.8 x 1.7 x 1.0 cm (whole object) | RCIN 45549

This brooch originally formed the centrepiece of a bracelet. In 1893 each bridesmaid received one as a present from the bridegroom, whose emblems are integral to the design. The diamond anchor recalls Prince George’s naval career and the white flower is a Rose of York, highlighting his recent creation as Duke of York. This one belonged to Princess Victoria of Wales.
