AFTER JOHN JABEZ EDWIN MAYALL (1813-1901)

King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, when Prince and Princess of Wales, in their wedding clothes

1863

Hand coloured albumen print | 28.0 x 21.8 cm (image) | RCIN 2870063

Princess Alexandra wore a dress of completely British manufacture adorned with swags of artificial orange blossom. The Prince of Wales wore the robes of the Order of the Garter. The initials VR and the date ‘24 May’, Queen Victoria’s birthday, at the bottom of the frame suggest that this photograph was a birthday present to Queen Victoria from her newly married son and daughter-in-law.
