Engagement photograph of Prince Albert, Duke of York and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon

Jan 1923

Gelatin silver print | 24.2 x 19.0 cm (image) | RCIN 2940850

In June 1920 Prince Albert was created Duke of York. It was around this time that his courtship with Lady Elizabeth began. The Duke was described as her ‘devoted suitor for two or three years’ before his offer of marriage was accepted on 13 January 1923. The engagement was announced three days later and this photograph was taken shortly after.
