Childhood and Education

The family settled in Paris, where Prince Philip attended school. He was also educated in England and Germany. In 1934 at the age of 13 he arrived at Gordonstoun, a newly-founded school near the Moray coast in Scotland. Under its headmaster, Dr Kurt Hahn, the school encouraged every pupil to achieve their full potential. Physical activities played a large part in the timetable and pupils helped in the local community. Prince Philip did well and excelled at sports. He learned to sail while he was at Gordonstoun and developed a lifelong passion for the sea.
