At the age of 74, Lucian Freud published this, his first self-portrait print. The stark top-lighting is softened by plate tone where the etching plate was not wiped clean of ink. The artist was appointed to the Order of Merit in 1993, and three years later presented the print to The Queen for the Order of Merit portrait series in the Royal Collection.
