JOHN RANDALL BRATBY (1928-92)

A self-portrait in a mirror

signed and dated 1976

RCIN 922856

John Bratby was a founder of the so-called 'Kitchen Sink' school of painting in the 1950s. His works were mostly portraits or domestic interiors, and here he combines these two genres – Bratby reflected in a shaving mirror held in his left hand, with his slippered feet resting on a stool in a mundane room. The work formed part of the Royal Academy's Silver Jubilee Gift to The Queen in 1977.
