CAROLINE KIRKLEY (B. C.1773) AFTER SIR JOSHUA REYNOLDS (1723-92)

A self-portrait of Sir Joshua Reynolds

1795

RCIN 641022

Caroline Kirkley was the daughter of Reynolds's servant Ralph Kirkley; she was apprenticed to the mezzotinter John Raphael Smith, but this is her only known print. It was published a month after Cat. 41 (alongside) and may have been intended as a pair to that print, reproducing paintings from the beginning and end of Reynolds's career.
